Just when you think this government can’t get more ridiculous, along comes Yvette Cooper on the morning news circuit. Last week Keir Starmer was ridiculed when he told BBC Radio 5 Live he was “a supporter of flags”

He continued:

I am the leader of the Labour Party who put the Union Jack on our Labour Party membership cards. I always sit in front of the Union Jack. I’ve been doing it for years, and it attracted a lot of comment when I started doing it.

So when Yvette Cooper was asked on BBC Breakfast if she had a flag on display at home, she went ‘hold my bandwagon-jumping beer Keir’…

Her response was truly extraordinary; she gleefully trilled:

We actually have union jack bunting on our garden shed at the moment, I’ve got st goerges flags, I’ve got St George’s bunting, I’ve got a yorkshire rose bunting as well, I’ve got union jack flags and tablecloths, we’ve got the lot!

Asked if she’s got a flag on display in her home, the Home Secretary says she has Union Jack bunting, St Georges flags, St Georges bunting, and Union Jack flags and tablecloths. pic.twitter.com/gvYsfMqOrf

Twitter does what it does best – take the piss

Of course, Twitter had an absolute field day with Yvette Cooper, doing what we do best – absolutely take the piss. And being the Canary’s official Flag Shagging correspondent (self appointed), I had to share the best one’s with you.

Why stop at just bunting and tablecloths:

I wear flags on nights out, I eat flags, I wash with flags, I have flag children, I say a prayer to my flag each evening, I smoke and drink flags, I drive a flag to work, I go on holiday to flags every year, I bake flags every Sunday and put up flags instead of a Christmas tree. https://t.co/ATEhucHM3z

I cant wait:

We are approximately 14 days away from the entire cabinet wearing Geri Halliwell’s 1997 Union Jack dress to PMQS. https://t.co/1g5jLZN9Pw

Yvette Cooper: not patriotic enough

Stan pointed out she’s not actually being that patriotic:

where’s her fucking poppy https://t.co/dec0smh2L1

— Stan’s Account (@tristandross) September 2, 2025

But it’s not enough flags for some, why does she hate Britain?

I actually don’t think that’s enough flags. Why does Yvette Cooper hate this country so much? https://t.co/E8X6sm14L7

— Ash Sarkar (@AyoCaesar) September 2, 2025

Once you see it you cant not see it, the childlike glee:

pause at 3 seconds in to see Cooper’s face absolutely light up at the opportunity to unleash her pre-prepared ‘flags are amazing’ answer because the people at the top of government genuinely seem to think this impresses voters https://t.co/yjoyTOC8HK

Yvette Cooper: beyond parody

Armando Ianucci wishes he wrote this:

Flags, Glen, I want every fucking windbag doing press features shagging flags like its full moon at Glastonbury. I don’t give a shit if Argos sold out, you’ve got red paint and twenty mini roundabouts north of the river, get fucking moving. and don’t call me if you’re run over https://t.co/H2Fs5K1mUt pic.twitter.com/vgWs76AvDW

— GEORGE (@Luristelium) September 2, 2025

I’m flags Da ba dee da ba da:

i have a flag house
with a flag window
flag is the colour
of all that i wear
flag are the streets
and all the trees are too
i have a girlfriend
and she’s a big flag https://t.co/sDqM9i4nma

Ed gets in on the act

While actor Sean Biggerstaff reminded us who her husband is:

A flag shagging den and it’s got Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls in it. The dinner party venue from Hell. https://t.co/nER6g7hwjQ

The British public see’s Starmer for what he really is

We’re only a few days away from Keir Starmer turning up to Parliament in an England flag patterned suit aren’t we. pic.twitter.com/95q1dqJmO7

— Evolve Politics (@evolvepolitics) September 2, 2025

The thing is, this is what they’re saying this week, in a few weeks, once it ultimately leads to even more violence, Yvette Cooper and the Labour Party will be condemning flags – as they flip flop with everything else:

Keir Starmer taking the knee. While wearing St George’s Cross face paint. While snapping a selfie at Pride. While wearing a transphobic t-shirt. While setting fire to an immigrant’s house. While shaking his head to show he disagrees with it. While giving a thumbs up to camera.

— Kieran Hurley (@kieran_hurley) September 2, 2025

I’m not sure who the government think they’re pleasing with this weird display of flag shagging, cos while the left are all taking the piss the actual flag shaggers on the right can see it’s insincere and Labour don’t really want to shag flags.

One things for sure, we all fucking hate them – not least Yvette Cooper:

British politicians are some of the biggest losers on the planet. https://t.co/pcRYiuX3e2
