The 3 biggest freak-outs from establishment figures bricking it over the Scottish referendum

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called a second referendum for Scottish independence on 13 March. Since then, project fear already looks to be in full swing. Here are three of the biggest freak-outs from establishment figures:

Nigel Farage

Farage made a blustering appearance on Good Morning Britain, in which he proved he has no concept of irony:

for goodness sake do not allow the Scots to go through a second, false referendum where what they are being offered is not actually the truth.

This comes from the man whose political career centres on scapegoating migrants; and who promised an extra £350m a week for the NHS should the UK vote Brexit.

In a move that may guarantee a yes vote, the former UKIP leader said he “would be very sad” if Scotland opted for independence.

Conservative MP Richard Drax

In a Commons rant, meanwhile, Tory MP Richard Drax claimed supporters of independence are “lemmings” leading the Scottish people to “economic ruin”.

Apparently the Prime Minister agrees. She responded:

my honourable friend is right.

The Sun

At the same time, a Sun editorial stated that Sturgeon’s “demand” for another referendum was:

irresponsible, hypocritical… and bonkers.

It continued:

It’s less than three years since Scotland voted against leaving the UK — a vote her Scottish National Party described as a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity.

But the Scottish people elected the SNP convincingly. Its manifesto called for a second referendum if there was a “significant and material change such as Scotland being taken out of the EU against our will”. And Scotland voted against Brexit by 62%.

The Sun rounded it off:

We hope the Scottish people call Sturgeon out for her cynical, self-interested game-playing.

In 2014, project fear was rolled out with rocket boosters. But with Brexit, the case for the union now looks increasingly shaky. And you don’t have to be Scottish to understand the appeal of booting out the Conservatives and avoiding Brexit in one swoop.
